ABOUT

My grandmother always makes lox for the holidays, and my Scandinavian family never shows up to a special event without fish in hand.

Fish Picnic is a fish-forward banquet inspired by eating side-by-side with strangers and loved ones, sharing stories across the table as loaves of bread get passed back and forth, and the cold, salty ocean that we're so lucky to have access to in Maine. I want to invite you to join this casual, outdoors, family-style seating, where the food is just a vessel to share community at the table with one another.

It is a free, community-centered meal that happens once every couple months, with all food prepared by Jenny Ibsen.

PAST EVENTS

On Monday, September 12th, 2022, we gathered at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The meal began at 5pm and continued until the food was spent and the tablecloth imprinted. It took place on the lawn between two trees by the coast, facing β€œShip Cove,” with support and funding from Care-full Histories in tandem with Gabriel Chalfin-Piney.

A note on money, accessibility and artistic value

Each meal event is free to attend with the intention that food should remain accessible for all to consume, and that often in specific regard to the PortlandΒ food scene, dining "out" can be cost prohibitive, especially (and not exclusively) for those working in the hospitality industry. The cost and labor of these meals are supplemented and supported by the generosity of the The Kindling Fund and the American Rescue Plan Maine Project Grants.

For those who feel inclined and/orΒ are financially able,Β there is a suggested donation scale of $10-$40 per person, with the acknowledgement that extra funds will be used to support the labor behind the meal. While in an ideal world, all arts practices and projects would always benefit from funding and support, that is not necessarily a reality; and funding is limited. Your donation would continue to support my artistic practice, the ongoing meals of Fish Picnic, the time and labor spent shopping & preparing (mine and others'), and the food itself.
